After a year of recession, the French and German economies got their indexes positive. Though the growth is just 0.3% it may be the end of the crisis. Many Europeans received this news with joy, as these two giants might help pull out their neighbors from the crisis. New markets are opening for these countries industries, specially in the Far East.
A historical viral infection gave some insects genes that allow them to parasitise their caterpillar hosts, a new study finds.
Many species of wasps lay their eggs inside caterpillars. To make this possible, the wasps’ have a secret weapon in the form of a dose of virus-like particles that are injected along with the eggs.
Not only do these disable the caterpillars’ immune system to stop it attacking the eggs, they also cause paralysis and keep the host from pupating – turning the caterpillar into an eternally youthful larder and nursery for the wasp grubs. (more…)
The last European territory to abolish feudalism (called by some the classic feudalism), is the Channel Island of Sark. The Sark general election, 2008, held on 10 December 2008, was the first election held on this island in over 450 years, under a new constitutional arrangement.
57 candidates (nearly 10% of the population) stood for 28 seats in the Chief Pleas. Those elected will receive the title of conseillers, and will replace the mixed system of elected People’s Deputies and ex-officio Tenants in the outgoing Chief Pleas.
